Education: Alternate Route to Interim Teacher Certification

The Alternate Route to Interim Teacher Certification (ARC) Program is open to qualified individuals who are interested in teaching elementary (Grades K–5), secondary (Grades 6–12) or K–12 subjects, or adding endorsements to their current teaching certificate. The Special Education and Early Childhood endorsements are not available through Michigan’s alternate route programs.

The ARC Program is recognized and approved by the Michigan Department of Education. It enables eligible individuals to transition seamlessly from a career and/or college degree program into the role of a certified classroom teacher. The focus of the ARC program is to help individuals become successful, fully certified classroom teachers through a quality, rigorous alternative route program. Upon completion of the pre-certification courses, Schoolcraft College will recommend the candidate for the Interim Teaching Certificate. The candidate, at that time, will be certified to teach in any Michigan school and can then work as a certified teacher. Following three years of successful teaching with the certificate and completion of the program, the ARC teacher will be recommended for the Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate.

The coursework in the Alternative Route (ARC) Program is based on both the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium–Model Core Teaching Standards (2011) (InTASC) and International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards. The coursework and field experiences are designed to prepare the candidate to make a successful and seamless transition into the classroom as an effective teacher.

A new cohort of ARC teachers begin the program each semester; spring, fall and winter. The four precertification courses are offered in the evening, on the Livonia campus.  Additional professional development coursework will be offered during the spring and summer of the three years of teaching with the interim Certificate. Each ARC teacher will be provided ongoing professional support through the college supervisor and also a peer mentor.
