Sociology - SOC 220

Course Description

This course provides a survey of the origin and development of cities and the processes of urbanization which includes a discussion of the ecology and social organization of urban life. The special problems and realities of urban society will be covered as well as perspectives for the future.

(A requirement that must be completed before taking this course.)

Course Competencies

Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to:

• Apply sociological theories and concepts used in urban analysis.
• Outline the origin and development of the city beginning with early village life.
• Examine the development of urban centers in the U.S., using Detroit and other selected urban areas as examples.
• Analyze the structure and organization of contemporary American urban areas.
• Describe prejudice and discrimination using data.
• Explore contemporary urban development in selected nations.
• Investigate the global system and how it affects urban areas.
• Explore the immigrant experience and the role of ethnic enclaves.
• Prescribe sustainable urban development solutions.
