Published: 5/4/2007

Schoolcraft College will offer summer camps for boys and girls in soccer and basketball and for girls in volleyball. The camps match all players by age, size and skill level for balanced competitions.

There are two sessions of all-skills volleyball camps for girls, one beginning on July 9 and a second beginning on July 16. The four-day camps feature a maximum coach-to-player ration of one-to-twelve, practice in serving techniques and defensive skills, and individual training for various ages. The fee is $160 per student, and the camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. Camp coordinator is Rich Lamb, varsity volleyball coach.

Boys’ basketball camps run from June 25 through 29 or July 30 through August 3 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Girls’ sessions are scheduled for June 18 through 21 or July 23 through 26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Both camps emphasize fundamental skills, competitive games and drills, and individual instruction. The ratio of coaches to players is one-to-10 for each coach, who includes the college coaching staff and current and former players. Karen Lafata, women’s basketball coach, coordinates the girls’ camp, and Randy Henry, men’s basketball coach, coordinates the boys’ camp. The fee is $125 per student for both camps.

Five-day soccer camps have starting dates of July 9, 16, 23 and 30 for both boys and girls. Students will be divided into groups of age 5 through 8, 8 through 14, and 11 through 18, depending on skill levels. Students can sign up for half-day sessions at $125 per student or full-day sessions at $150 per student. The ration of coach to players is one-to-12. Camp coordinator is Rick Larson, varsity men’s soccer coach.
