Caroline McNutt is a Professor of Biology at Schoolcraft College, where she teaches courses in General Biology, Microbiology, Conservation Biology, and Nutrition.

After receiving her undergraduate degree in Honors Genetics from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, Canada, she worked in a government research lab investigating the biochemical basis of various lysosomal storage diseases.  She earned a Master’s degree in Genetics and Zoology and her thesis focused on genetic variations in the enzyme induction of alcohol metabolism.  Following a two-year stint doing microbiology and immunology research at Wayne State University, she earned her teaching credentials and subsequently taught high school science for seven years.  When an opportunity opened up to teach a biology class at Schoolcraft College, she gave it a shot, loved it, and has been here ever since.  To her, teaching is an incredibly fulfilling profession, and she tells her students every semester that she hopes they can follow their passion, just as she has found her “dream job”.  College science courses can be intimidating to some students, but she is committed to helping every student to achieve success in her classes.

Professor McNutt has long been a proponent of using innovative active learning strategies to engage students and encourage them to do their best.  She actively pursues professional development opportunities, both at Schoolcraft College and at the regional and national levels.    She is married and has two sons who now have families of their own.
