Identification

Student Identification (ID) Verification

As part of the admissions and enrollment process, new and returning students may be requested to provide a recognized government-issued photo ID to verify their identity. Schoolcraft College requires identity verification for several reasons, including but not limited to complying with U.S. Department of Education requirements to prevent financial aid fraud; ensuring compliance with the College’s accrediting agencies to confirm that the student who registers for a course is the one who takes the course; and protecting the privacy of student educational records. Students have an ongoing obligation to provide proof of identity when requested by the College. Failure to provide the requested photo ID and verify your identity in a timely manner may result in the suspension of your admissions process and could affect the awarding of financial aid.

Acceptable forms of government-issued photo identification (ID).

All documentation must be current, valid, and legible. (black and white documentation are not accepted)

  • State-issued Driver’s License or Identification Card (front & back required)
  • United States Passport or Passport Card (front & back required)
  • United States Permanent Resident Card (front & back required)
  • Foreign Passport
  • Employment Authorization Document (EAD)
  • Other International Government Identification (in English, front & back required)
  • K-12 student ID (CURRENTLY enrolled high school Dual Enrolled student only)

Student Identity Verification in Distance Learning

To ensure the protection of student privacy, the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA) and regional accreditation policy requires institutions offering distance education courses or programs to ensure a student registering for such course(s) represents the same student who participates or receives credit in the course(s). The HEOA requires institutions to use one or more of the following methods: a secure login and pass code; proctored examinations; and new or other effective technologies and practices to verify student identification. Schoolcraft College provides each student with a unique student ID number, email address, username, and initial passwords for secure access to College systems, including the College’s learning management system for distance learning. Students are responsible for their institutional logins and user activity. Any distance learning work, assessments, or activities graded and contribute to a student’s grade must be submitted via the College’s learning management system, which verifies the student’s identity as noted above.

Student Identification Card

Students should carry a Schoolcraft College student ID card or a valid driver’s license/state ID card on campus at all times. After registering for classes, you can obtain a student ID card by visiting the Registration Center. Please bring along another form of photo ID.

The first card is free, but there is a fee for a replacement/duplicate card, which must be paid at the Cashier’s Office prior to the replacement card being issued.

Under College policy, College officials may direct students to identify themselves. They also may ask students who have their Schoolcraft student ID card in their possession to produce that card. Failure to comply with either directive could result in the student being found responsible for a “failure to comply” violation of the Student Code of Conduct. Identification is also required to access some services and conduct transactions in offices.
